Hiraeth, heavy body acrylic on canvasIn this project, I was inspired by the word “hiraeth,” which means to feel homesickness for a home that doesn’t exist. I wanted to create this feeling through showing a lonely building that seems unlike a home. I studies preliminary paint layers that help to unify all colours in a painting. I researched colour palette and it helped me understand how each colour in a piece has to work together in order for the piece to be united. My light and shadows are stronger than last year. I applied my learning with a blue base coat that helped me keep all my colours in the same palette. I hope to improve on linework and blending.

Blissful Ignorance, heavy body acrylic on canvasIn this project, I wanted to illustrate the blissful ignorance with which we live without the knowledge of death’s existence. For this project, I focused on symbolism and color blocking. I used the crematorium as a symbolism for death and blocked in my colors to ensure that they blended well and fit the desired tone of my piece. I researched how to block in colors for a winter scene so I could create an accurate color palette that conveyed the cold, desolate, wintry feeling I was trying to achieve. I definitely see growth in my shading and color blending, and I feel that my piece has a better flow than in past works. I applied my new learning by blocking in colors before laying down my detailing and shading. I hope to improve a bit on my detail skills. I will gain new knowledge through research.

Untitled?, heavy body acrylic on canvas and colored pencil on Bristol paperIn this project, I wanted to demonstrate how it feels to be born as a different gender than you identify. For this project, I focused on contrast. I wanted to experiment with different mediums and combine them into a collage-like piece to maximize the contrast. I researched methods of collaging mediums and discovered that a lot of collages separate the subject and the environment in creation and then paste them together. I definitely see growth in my use of color; I think my subject was very realistic and I liked the way the colors made the skin seem more lifelike. I contrasted the traditional "boy" colors of blue and traditional "girl" colors of pink to show the contrast between how the subject feels and how they are perceived, respectively. I applied my new learning by combining two mediums into one piece. I hope to improve a bit on my background skills because I feel this background is a bit plain. I will gain new knowledge through research.

Untitled 2, oil pastel on Bristol paperI wanted to illustrate a situation where the subject has lost someone they care about to death, and is now unable to reach that person. For this project, I focused on blending and detail work to create a unified piece that still includes elements such as blades of grass to help facilitate a flow of the piece. I reserached how to draw grass with oil pastel because I wanted to figure out how to create texture with the medium. I researched how to create unity and learned that consistency of colors ,patterns and shapes can help create a connection between the environment and the subject. In this piece, I used this in the patterns with my gravestones to tie the grave plots together. I used this in my graves to create unity in this part of the piece, and then cut off the painting with the sidewalk and did not include any specific shapes so the part of the piece with the subject is extremely cut off and separate from the unified graves. I used the grey from the gravestone to highlight the subject in the background to tie the piece together through colors rather than shapes, so there is still a difference between the unity of the grave area and the trees/sky. I see growth in my light and shadow work— there are definite yellow and blue undertones, respectively. I applied my new learning by blending colors heavily to create shadow and then adding detail work on top. I hope to improve a bit more on my detail skills. I will gain new knowledge through research.

I wanted to show a situation where the environment is in control of the subject. Though we are constantly at mercy to our environment, we tend to believe that we have control when in actuality we do not. I learned how to use leading lines in photography so my photo background had a focal point for my subject. I researched how to stage a photo, which helped me understand how to frame the dark edges of my photo so the walls of the alley fed into the middle and brought the viewer’s attention there. I see growth in my sense of space– I have a stronger understanding of how to best use the space I’m given to create a mood. I applied my new learning by taking a photo with definite leading lines and adding my subject at the focal point of the photograph. I hope to improve a bit more on my shading and shadowing. I will gain new knowledge through research.

Narcissus and Oblivion , coloured pencil on paperThis piece serves to show a situation where one is so involved in their desires that they neglect to accept the reality of the world around them. I learned how to layer base colors over final drawings to blend tones together so the piece seems more united. I did this with two different colors for each of the scenes to blend the individual scenes while still highlighting the contrast. I learned more about contrast to understand how to symbolize the difference between desire and reality. I see growth in my shading and proportions. I blended two separate colors over the two scenes to blend the individual scenes while still highlighting the contrast. I hope to improve my shading. I will gain new knowledge through research.

Truth, graphite on paperI wanted to illustrate a memory and how looking into the past can show us the person we used to be. I researched lighting and shadow and how to use ranges of light to create a sense of depth and bring focus to a specific area of the piece. The use of lighting can help to tell a story by assigning significance to the piece of the artwork that is brought into focus by the artist’s use of a light source. I see growth in my proportions and shadow/use of space. I applied my new learning by focusing the light source on the face of my subject as if it is coming from within the coffin to show the metaphorical light of truth shining on them as they are looking into their past. I hope to continue to improve my shading and proportions. I’ll gain new knowledge through research.

Lost in Thought, digitalI wanted to show a situation where the subject is consumed by their own thoughts and therefore becomes detached from their surroundings. I studied contrast and how it creates a mood/adds emotion to a piece. I researched contrast and how it creates a mood/adds emotion to a piece. I see growth in my proportions; I feel that the balance of my subject’s limbs/head is accurate and realistic. I hope to improve my shading and linework. I will gain new knowledge through research.

Untitled, digitalI wanted to illustrate the process of healing from grief and loss. I studied symbolism and the importance of crows and death. I researched symbolism and color and how they creates a mood/add emotion to a piece. I see growth in my use of line and shading, as well as the clear nature of the message I’m hoping to convey in my work. I hope to improve my shading. I will gain new knowledge through research.
